The Shape I Was; a ceramic journal
Fascinated by the unexpected qualities that production mistakes bring to a designed object, Rupert leaned into this aspect of ceramics. He started making rectangular water pitchers, inviting honest mistakes in the process by deforming the pieces quickly and intuitively. After firing several pieces, he was struck not only by the new life they seemed to possess, but by the objects’ ability to hold memories. Seeing them frozen in forms shaped by his hands, he could remember how he felt that day. He continued the process for over 50 consecutive days, Titling each piece with its production date and a short description of how it was shaped.
What began as an exploration of production flaws evolved into a physical journal.
